I’ve lost track of how many of my series of conservatism posts I’ve made over the years, so I’m starting the numbering over.
Today’s topic is the wiping of asses with the Second Amendment. Around the time of the election, there were numerous reports of self-described Republican/conservatives making one or more firearms purchases before Obama takes office in anticipation of the Democrat-controlled Congress and the Democrat-controlled administration making quick work of what is left of the Second Amendment. I, myself, made at least one firearms purchase this past year, and I expect to make one or more in 2009 as well as I am able.
However, it is not because I am concerned about the Democrats. To focus on Democrats while resting secure in the knowledge that Republicans are hard at work protecting our Second Amendment rights is to ignore reality. Republicans have been on the leading edge of the anti-Second Amendment wave of legislation for some time now.
Let’s look back just a few months. Back in June 2008, HR 6257 was introduced into the House to reinstate the draconian Second Amendment violation, commonly referred to as the assault weapons ban, which was passed during the Clinton administration back in 1994. The only semi-redeeming feature of this piece of gos se legislation was a sunset clause causing it to automatically expire ten years later were it not renewed by Congress. It wasn’t. Since September 2004, that hideous piece of unconstitutional legislation has been history.
However, someone(s) saw fit to try to breathe new life into it. Fortunately, it hasn’t happened yet. But it is incredibly telling who exactly those someones were who tried to revive this Second Amendment-violating measure.
The sponsor and all four co-sponsors were… yes, Republicans. There were no Democratic sponsors for this measure at all.
So for those of you Republican voter types who are stocking up because Obama’s “urban” agenda includes renewing the expired AWB, you need to call off your party’s dogs*, too. Some of them are:
Rep. Mark Kirk [R-IL]
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen [R-FL]
Rep. Michael Ferguson [R-NJ]
Rep. Christopher Shays [R-CT]
Rep. Michael Castle [R-DE]
How anyone who supports 2A rights can stomach the GOP’s false image as the champion thereof is beyond me.
*I sincerely apologize to my dog Pepper Ann Delbarco and all of the world’s actual canines, none of whom are anywhere near as unethical or dangerous as the politicians who I euphemistically refer to as dogs.
